Abstract: This article examines the contributions of Shardha Ram Philori, a
notable figure in the development of Punjabi prose during the British period. Born in Philor, a town in the
Jalandhar District of Indian Punjab. Philori was proficient in several vernacular languages of India,
including Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu, Persian, and Punjabi. His expertise in Oriental languages led him to a
position with the British Government, where he authored significant works aimed at training British
officers. These writings are considered a valuable repository of Punjabi literature, blending traditional
and contemporary elements of Punjabi prose. This paper explores the quality of Philori's diction, language,
and literary creation, while also assessing his impact and legacy in the context of Punjabi literary
history.
