Introduction

GC Lahore played a pivotal role in the projection and development of Punjabi language and literature. The Ravi magazine of GCU by publishing their creative writings, promoted many Punjabi prose writers and poets. Many famous personalities and literary figures availed the chance to study here. Some of them worked here as teachers while others at their workplaces imparted valuable services for the cause of Punjabi language and culture. For example Dr. Nazir Ahmad, Ex Principal of GC edited the mystical Poetry of Baba Fareed Ganj Shakar, Shah Hussain, Sultan Bahoo, Bulhy Shah, Prof. Fazal-e-Haq, Prof. Sufi Ghulam Mustafa Tabasum, Prof. Qayum Nazar, Dr. Waheed Qureshi, Faiz Ahmad Faiz, Ishfaq Ahmad, Muhammad Saleem Ur Rahman worked for the promotion of Punjabi. Prof. Laeeq Babery (French), Prof. Muneer Lahori, Dr. Abbas Najmi (famous T.V Compare) taught here. Many popular literary figures like Muneer Niazi, Ahmed Rahi, Sharif Kunjahi, Ustad Daman etc frequently came to train the students. This was the atmosphere when the students of GC Lahore showed their deep interest to study Punjabi as an elective and optional subject at B.A and Intermediate Level. So, this subject gained popularity and a vast majority of students opted Punjabi Language and Literature. The Punjabi classes were started in 1980. The year 2013 was a landmark in the history of GCU when university administration took a bold step to start Punjabi as major subject in B.A (Hons). A large number of students opted Punjabi as major and allied subject. An independent department of Punjabi was established by the special interest and patronage of worthy Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Hassan Amir Shah in 2017. Prof. Dr. Saeed Khwar Bhutta took the Charge of Chairperson Punjabi Department on April 2, 2018.
