The Department of Global Studies is a newly established department within the Institute of Global and Historical Studies. This department is the first of its kind in Pakistan and it will open and ensure new professional opportunities for students. Globalization affects humanity in various ways, including crisis of identity, transformations in culture, and obstacles in development, human rights, migration, environment, and security. Global Studies – an interdisciplinary discipline that deals with the complex cultural, historical, economic, political, social, and environmental questions shaping our world – will address these global concerns with a local perspective. Students in this discipline will study global systems, cultures, and problems from multiple perspectives of history, political science, anthropology, economics, environmental studies, technology, philosophy and sociology. The Global Studies Department will combine pedagogies of theory and practice to prepare students for practical life in both the international and national contexts. The courses offered will focus on how global affairs influence the identity of the Global South when global ideas are applied. Moreover, students will develop professional skills to find future opportunities.
The Global Studies Department aims to ensure Pakistan’s global presence through its graduates. The department will transform the graduates from consumers of knowledge to producers of knowledge. The department will share the library and other facilities of the Institute of History. Additionally, the Global Studies Department have its own student society to train students for global and transnational professions. The department will offer full scholarships and travel allowances to students with exceptional grades so they can focus on their studies.
The Global Lab is a dynamic initiative within the Global Studies Department that serves as a hub for experiential learning and research. The purpose to establish this activity room is to provide students with hands-on opportunities to explore and address global challenges. Under the guidance of faculty members, students engage in collaborative activities and develop critical thinking skills, cultural competency, and practical solutions to complex global issues. Through the Global Lab, the Global Studies Department empowers students to become global citizens equipped to tackle the pressing challenges of our interconnected world.
Global Orbit Society has been established in October 2024 under the umbrella of Global Studies Department. Dr. Saima Khan, incharge of the Global Studies Department is an advisor of society. Society aims to bring awareness about global issues in an interdisciplinary way. Society is actively organizing various talks and workshops. These activities offer students a chance for their skill improvement. Notably, the society's weekly student-led academic activity titled, Global Practicum serves as a pivotal activity, which provides students with a platform to apply theoretical knowledge to real-life situations. Through its efforts, the Global Orbit Society cultivates a sense of global awareness and collaboration among its members.
