The Department promotes research in all genres of Urdu Literature and also stresses on comparative and interdisciplinary study of Literature.
The Department publishes its research journal the "Tahqeeq Nama" on an bi-annual basis. A number of universities in
the Subcontinent subscribe to the journal. It publishes research articles by scholars from Pakistan and abroad.

Majlis e Iqbal, a university-level society with about hundred years of history, is dedicated to promoting Urdu literature. Through various national and international events like weekly critic sessions, author meetings, book seminars, literary trips, seminars, conferences, and poetic meetups, it enriches the literary heritage of Government College University Lahore.
Bano Qudsia is an influential writer of Urdu. She has a special significance to established regimes of gender in the Pakistani society. She was Ravian so to give tribute for her unforgettable role in promotion of Urdu literature , ‘Bano Qudsia Society for Gender Sensitization’ was established in 2021. Dr Almas Khanum, Associate professor from Department of Urdu is founder advisor of society. The objectives of this society are broad۔ So far many national and international conferences and seminars have been organized under the society۔ This society covers broad topics like gender awareness, roles of different genders in society, literature and gender, society and gender.
The Urdu Majlis was established in 1931 and is one of the landmarks in the intellectual and literary development of Government College University Lahore.Literary giants like Imtiaz Ali Taj, Patras Bokhari and Hafeez Janlandhri have been closely associated with the Urdu Majlis. Currently Dr Farzana Riaz of the Urdu Department is an Advisor of the Urdu Majlis. The Majlis continues in its traditions of organising literary events such as Mushairas, book launches and poetry and book readings. The Majlis continues to inspire students in developing their love of Urdu literature
The "Azerbaijan Urdu Research Center," affiliated with the Department of Urdu, has been introduced to encourage research in Urdu language and culture, fostering academic ties not only within Pakistan but also with Central Asian nations. This is first Azerbaijan Urdu Research Centre in Pakistan. This center was established in 2023. This is the combine project of Department of Urdu and Azerbaijan National Academy of science. Mr. Khazar Farhadov, Ambassador of Azerbaijan in Pakistan and Dr. Isa Habibbayli president of Azerbaijan National Academy of Science attended the foundation ceremony with a delegation. Many national and International conferences organized and books published under this center.
