Overview of the department:
The Department of Computer Science at GCU Lahore, established in 1999, is located in the university's postgraduate block. The department houses five computer labs: the Postgraduate Lab, the Main Lab, the General Lab, the Hardware Lab, and the ICS Lab, all equipped with over 200 computers. These labs support the academic needs of students pursuing BS (Honors), MS, and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science.

The Department of Computer Science now offers an up-to-date portfolio of undergraduate courses. These courses are selected for their relevance in the modern world, ensuring that our students acquire the knowledge and skills best suited to their future endeavors. The four-year BS Program in Computer Science is mandatory for all undergraduate students. However, they can choose their final projects in various IT fields, such as Business, Digital Media, Gaming Platforms, Software Engineering, and Wireless Networks, based on their career aspirations.
The BS (CS) Program consists of 133 credit hours spread over four years, with a total of eight semesters—two semesters each year. To earn the degree, students must complete the required credit hours and the final project.
The MS program in the Department of Computer Science is designed to provide students with up-to-date and relevant knowledge in the field. The program includes features such as value-added courses and the opportunity for a professional placement during the dissertation module, preparing students for careers in both the private and public sectors. The MS program consists of 36 credit hours over a span of two years, with two semesters each year. To earn the MS degree, students must complete 2 core courses (6 credit hours), 6 elective courses (18 credit hours), and a thesis (12 credit hours).
In today's technology-driven world, organizations generate and collect zettabytes of data daily. The exponential increase in data volume necessitates discovering hidden, useful patterns within these vast amounts of information. The MS in Data Science program is designed to equip students with the skills needed to transform raw data into actionable insights, enabling complex business decision-making. Students will learn to process large and complex datasets using computational, statistical, and machine learning techniques. The program provides exposure to the latest trends and technologies in the field, preparing graduates to contribute to the growing market for data science products both nationally and internationally.
Launched in 2013, the PhD program of the CS Department continues to excel, having produced three PhDs so far. To apply for admission, applicants must have 18 years of education culminating in an MS/MPhil in Computer Science with at least a 3.00/4.00 CGPA or 1st Division. Applicants must also pass either the GRE (International Exam) or the GAT (University Exam) with a minimum score of 60.
The program requires the completion of 18 credit hours of coursework in the first year, followed by a comprehensive examination that grants PhD students candidacy as researchers. Subsequently, students must write their PhD dissertations, producing at least one impact factor publication from their research. The duration of the PhD program is 3-8 years.
