125th annual sports begins at GCU

The 125th annual sports of Government College University Lahore have commenced with a grand march past by contingents of academic departments at the Oval Ground. A contingent of physically challenged students also took part in the march.
 Yusra Ayub led the flag representation, carrying the national flag during the ceremony.
 Businessman Hamza Tariq Sufi, director of Sufi Group of Companies, was the chief guest. Old Ravian Union President Athar Ismail attended as guest of honour.
 Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Omer Chaudhry, Chairman Sports Board Yasir Sultan, Director Sports Muhammad Waseem Akhtar and Registrar Dr Shaukat Ali were also present. More than 40 departments participated in the march past competitions.
 Addressing the ceremony, the vice chancellor said the event was “a celebration of GCU’s traditions and history” and urged students to uphold the university’s legacy through discipline and conduct.
 In his remarks, chief guest Hamza Tariq Sufi said his group was supporting education and sports and advised students to excel and bring pride to their institution and parents. A cake was also cut to mark 125 years of sports at GCU.
 In the university-level march past, the Commerce and Finance Department secured first position, Biotechnology second, SDSC third and International Relations fourth. At the intermediate level, Pre-Medical won first position, Pre-Engineering second and Commerce and ICS third.
The annual sports will conclude today, Feb 11, at the Oval Ground. A range of gymkhana events, including the naib qasid race, female staff race, chatti race, pillow fighting, sack race and musical chairs, are also part of the programme, with Old Ravians expected to participate.
