Government College University (GCU) Lahore’s Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies held its first International Quran Conference, titled “The Quran and Contemporary Challenges.” Around 140 scholars, researchers and teachers from Pakistan and abroad attended the conference and presented research papers in parallel academic sessions.
Speakers discussed Quranic teachings in the context of contemporary social and moral issues, with emphasis on reflection, ethics and character building. University of Narowal Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq and GCU Distinguished Professor Dr. Khurshid-ul-Hassan Rizvi were among the key speakers. The inaugural session was moderated by Dr. Hafiz Sfarish Ali.
Prof. Dr. Israr Ahmad Khan, Director of the Institute of Quranic Wisdom, Ankara, addressed the conference online from Turkey.
Conference chief organiser Prof. Dr. Muhammad Farooq Haider said the conference aimed to encourage academic reflection on contemporary questions in light of the Quran. He thanked GCU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Omer Chaudhry for supporting the event.
Other speakers included Prof. Dr. Akram Rana (Minhaj University Lahore), Prof. Dr. Ahmad bin Mishaal bin Aziz Al-Ghamdi (Umm Al-Qura University, Makkah), Prof. Dr. Abdul Quddus Suhaib (Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan), and Prof. Dr. Muhammad Akram Chaudhary (University of the Punjab). They discussed themes such as ethics, questions faced by youth, character building, and tadabbur (deep reflection).
