Art with a Purpose - GCU VC applauds young artists as socially conscious voices

Fine Arts students at Government College University (GCU) Lahore have used their creative voices to spotlight urgent social and environmental concerns through their annual Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) thesis exhibition. The three-day event, titled Project Display, was inaugurated by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Omer Chaudhry at the Ustad Allah Bux Art Gallery, Alhamra Arts Council.
The exhibition showcases the thesis work of 55 graduating students — 16 painters and 39 graphic designers — who explored a range of pressing issues through visual narratives, UI/UX redesigns, mixed-media installations, and digital documentaries.
Their work addresses themes such as water pollution by Ahsan Iqbal, the disappearance of indigenous crafts by Waqas Haider, the impact of cultural norms on women by M. Ihtesham, and the recognition of unsung heroes by Huma Irfan Sherwani.
Several projects also delve into mental health, memory, and identity — including In My Head by Habiba Waheed and Behind the Smile by M. Umer Farooq — while painting students explored deeply personal and emotional subjects such as Absence of Father by Ayesha, Stages of Grief by Rabbia, and Withering Life by Sibrah Shahid.
In his remarks, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Omer Chaudhry praised the students for their thought-provoking and socially relevant work. He noted that the exhibition reflects a fusion of artistic discipline and critical inquiry. “These young artists and designers are emerging as socially conscious voices ready to engage with the professional world,” he said.
He added that the purpose of the exhibition is not only to showcase the academic and creative journey of the students but also to serve as their introduction to the professional art and design community. “The exhibit is the culmination of months of research, experimentation, and critical thinking, offering the public a glimpse into the diverse voices shaping Pakistan’s next generation of creative professionals,” he emphasized.
Also in attendance were Prof. Dr. Babar Aziz, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and Ms. Amna Anwar Khan, Incharge of the Department of Fine Arts. The jury evaluating the projects for creativity, execution, and relevance included Prof. Dr. Bilal Ahmed from Punjab University, Naumana Masood from Government Gulberg College, and Ayesha Siddiqa from Lahore College for Women University.
