At GCU, we are dedicated to upholding our tradition of excellence, while continuously evolving to meet the challenges of the modern world. Our academic programs across the arts, sciences, and humanities are designed to foster critical thinking, creativity, and research excellence. We are committed to providing an educational experience that is both enriching and accessible to all.
Our campus, a blend of historic architecture and modern facilities, is a hub of academic activity and cultural life. It is here that our students find the resources, guidance, and inspiration to realize their full potential. Our esteemed faculty are not just teachers, but mentors and researchers, recognized for their scholarship worldwide.
Seeking education in GCU has always been the dream of the cream of our country’s youth. The realization of this dream is unique and distinguished for numerous reasons. I will draw your attention to some of them. I want you to know that this is the oldest higher education institution in the northern parts of the undivided India. It flung its doors open to the students for the first time on 1st January 1864. It was the first college that was commissioned to impart western liberal education side by side with the oriental subjects such as Islamic Studies, Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Hindi and Sanskrit. Over the last 160 years, we have absorbed in our system the best educational practices of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. The best illustration to justify this point is none other than Dr. Muhammad Iqbal - the most outstanding old student of this college. Iqbal imbued in him the finest literary trends of Persian, Arabic, Urdu and English verse, besides delving upon the philosophical canons of the West and the East. Do you know what role the Government College of Lahore played in shaping his outlook on life? For you to discover this point, I would like you to find out about his devotion to his Professor of Philosophy Thomas Arnold. It was indeed Prof. Arnold who guided him to grow into a serious student of Philosophy. Iqbal’s adoration of Prof. Arnold ultimately led him to become a serious Muslim thinker whose peer in his field is hard to be found in the entire millennium.
The tradition of scientific inquiry and research was also made to flourish in the four walls of GC. The temperament and self-control which a person needs to become a successful scientist is best taught at GC. How else would two of our alumni make it to the pedestal reserved exclusively for the Nobel Laureates? I wonder if you know something about the great Dr Abdus Salaam – a Physicist par excellence – and Dr Har Gobind Khorana – an outstanding Chemist. Of course, both these scientists conducted state-of-the-art research in the West. But their formative habits were shaped during their stint at Government College. I can refer to Dr. Salam’s essay that he had penned down for our students’ magazine The Ravi in 1989 – the year when GC turned 125-year-old. He fondly remembers how he was the first science student of GC who got to edit both the English and Urdu sections of the students’ magazine The Ravi. The only other student who got this privilege was Patras Bokhari from the English Literature Department. You see how a student of science was equally well-versed in languages and literature. Let me quote the purpose of education in the words of Dr. Salam, “The primary purpose of an educational system, in my view, is to develop a person’s character.”
As we move forward, our focus remains on expanding our research capabilities, enhancing our curricular offerings, and strengthening our international collaborations. We are also deeply committed to contributing to society through outreach programs, public seminars, and community service initiatives.
I invite you to explore the opportunities at GCU, where you will be challenged to think independently and lead effectively. Whether you are a prospective student, a current member of our community, or one of our many distinguished alumni, you are an integral part of our journey. Together, we will continue to embody the spirit of "Courage to Know," inspiring change and impacting the world.
