Muhammad Javed

Muhammad Javed is a distinguished Pakistani painter, visual artist, and writer, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of the modern art movement in Pakistan. He graduated in Fine Art (Painting) from the National College of Arts, Lahore in 1962, belonging to its first graduating class, and has had a professional art career spanning six decades. His work embraces city heritage, socio‑economic and cultural themes, and often reflects the complexities of everyday life through compelling compositions and unique visual idioms. He has also worked innovatively with charcoal and modern calligraphic paintings. Over the years, he has held multiple solo and group exhibitions both in Pakistan and abroad. He was a scholar at MIT, USA, where he received the First Annual Distinguished Artist Award in 1989, and in 2022 was honored with the President’s Pride of Performance for painting. Javed’s art and writings have contributed significantly to Pakistan’s cultural discourse and art education.
