GCU Hosts Keynote on Maritime Security and Blue Economy Potential

The Quaid-e-Azam Political Science Society (QPSS) at Government College University (GCU) Lahore hosted an interactive lecture on maritime awareness and national security, featuring a keynote address by Rear Admiral Sohail Ahmad Azmie HI(M), Commander Central Punjab and President of the Maritime Centre of Excellence at Pakistan Navy War College, Lahore.

The session was opened by Prof. Dr. Fouzia Ghani, Chairperson of the Department of Political Science. In his keynote address, Rear Admiral Azmie emphasized the immense, untapped potential of Pakistan's "blue economy." He noted that while 95% of the nation's trade relies on maritime routes. He highlighted that optimal utilization of Pakistan's 1,000-kilometer coastline and expansive Exclusive Economic Zone could generate up to $100 billion annually. The Commander also underscored the strategic efficiency of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), explaining that utilizing Gwadar Port drastically reduces international cargo transit times from 45 days to just 25 days while providing a secure trade corridor.

Addressing national defense, Rear Admiral Azmie detailed the Pakistan Navy's critical role in maintaining robust deterrence at sea, safeguarding commercial trade lines, and preventing the escalation of regional conflicts. He highlighted the Navy's ongoing commitment to securing merchant vessels through the Regional Maritime Security Patrol, alongside its rapid-response humanitarian efforts during national emergencies.

The event concluded with an interactive Q&A session with students, bridging academic theory with the strategic realities of Pakistan's maritime domain.
