GCU, Canadian university sign accord for student exchange, research

The Government College University (GCU) Lahore and the University of Regina (UoR), Canada, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Student Exchange Program Agreement (SEPA) to strengthen academic ties, joint research, and student mobility.

The agreement was signed by GCU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Omer Chaudhry and UoR Associate Vice-President (International) Haroon Chaudhry at a ceremony held at the GCU Main Campus on Friday.

Under the SEPA, both institutions will offer exchange opportunities for up to three undergraduate student semester units each academic year. To qualify for the exchange, GCU students must complete at least two years of study prior to applying, while UoR students are required to complete 30 credit hours.

The collaboration also provides students access to research placements through Mitacs, a Canadian national research organization. Eligible students will be able to participate in the Mitacs Globalink Research Internship (GRI), a 12-week paid program offering hands-on research experience across disciplines including technology, engineering, and social sciences.

During the meeting, the vice chancellor briefed the Canadian delegation on GCU’s research programs and history, noting that alongside regular academics, the university focuses on skill building, character development, and overall student grooming through co-curricular activities.

The signing ceremony was attended by senior GCU officials, including Prof Dr Hamid Mukhtar, Director Academic Planning and External Links Dr Fouzia Shahin, Director ORIC Prof Dr Faiza Sharif, Director International Students Office Dr Chand Raza, and Additional Registrar Tahir Mehmood Bashir.
