Int`l school on algebraic geometry begins at GCU

Eminent mathematicians from Germany and Spain joined Pakistani scholars at the Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences (ASSMS), Government College University Lahore, as the four-day International School on Algebraic Geometry: New Trends in Computational Algebraic Geometry and its Applications (NTICAGAIA-2025) commenced here on Tuesday.
A large number of researchers, faculty members and students from various institutions across Pakistan are participating in the event, which aims to strengthen research capacity, foster collaboration among global researchers and showcase recent developments in computational algebraic geometry and its applications.
Addressing the inaugural session, workshop chair Dr Khurram Shabbir welcomed the keynote speakers, Prof. Gerhard Pfister of the Technical University of Kaiserslautern, Germany, and Prof. Ignacio Luengo Velasco of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain, along with other speakers and participants.
He highlighted ASSMS’s role in promoting advanced mathematical research and education in Pakistan. He said registration for the school has been offered free of charge, reflecting ASSMS’s commitment to accessible high-level mathematical training and collaborative research without financial barriers.
Both foreign speakers expressed their gratitude for the invitation and appreciated the academic environment at ASSMS, terming the international school an important initiative for advancing research in algebraic geometry in Lahore.
Prof. Pfister also delivered an introductory lecture on fundamental concepts of algebraic geometry, which was followed by Dr Faria Kanwal’s talk on contemporary developments in commutative algebra and their relevance to computational algebraic geometry. In the subsequent online session, Dr Khawar Mehmood spoke on algebraic techniques in coding theory and their application to secure information processing.
The afternoon session, chaired by Dr Faria Kanwal, featured a lecture by Dr Imran Anwar on modern structural questions in algebraic geometry. The day concluded with a tutorial session jointly conducted by Prof. Pfister and Dr Kanwal, providing practical exposure to computational and theoretical tools introduced earlier in the day.
