The 124th Annual Sports event of Government College University (GCU) Lahore concluded on Sunday with a grand closing ceremony marked by colourful Gymkhana events. The event was graced by Chief Secretary Punjab, Zahid Akhtar Zaman, as the chief guest. Tennis star Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi and Secretary of Sports Board & Youth Affairs, Mr. Muzaffar Khan Sial, also attended the ceremony.
The Chief Secretary, along with GCU Registrar Dr. Shoukat Ali and Director of Sports Waseem Akhtar, distributed prizes among students who demonstrated outstanding performances in various competitions.
Aleena Gul from the Psychology Department won the title of Best Female Athlete 2025 for her exceptional performance in multiple sports competitions. Meanwhile, Muhammad Shahid from the Physical Education and Sports Department was declared the Best Male Athlete.
Overall, the team trophy for the best girls' team was won by the Psychology Department, while the Political Science Department secured second place. Among the boys, the team trophy was lifted by the Commerce & Finance Department, while the Law Department stood second.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Secretary Punjab Zahid Akhtar Zaman expressed his immense joy at returning to his alma mater. He added that promoting healthy activities among the youth is a key priority for the Punjab government. The Chief Secretary also visited various departments of the university and engaged in detailed discussions with students on a range of topics.
The Chief Secretary praised the sportsmanship and enthusiasm of GCU students, emphasizing the importance of sports activities in academic institutions.
Addressing the ceremony, GCU Registrar Dr. Shoukat Ali highlighted the rich legacy of sports at GCU, recalling the institution’s contributions in producing some of the finest athletes in Pakistan’s history. He also congratulated the winning teams.
Tennis star Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi also expressed his gratitude to the GCU administration, saying, GCU has always played a significant role in the development of sports in Pakistan. He also recalled his student life at GCU which later helped him succeed in professional tennis.
Secretary of Sports and Youth Affairs, Muzaffar Khan Sial also emphasized the Punjab government's unwavering commitment to promoting sports.
