A seminar highlighting the contributions of Government College University Lahore alumni to Pakistan's nuclear program was held at the university’s Main Campus. Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Shazia Bashir chaired the seminar, organized by the GCU Alumni Network in collaboration with student societies, including the Jones Physics Society and Rafi Physics Society.
In his address, chief guest Dr. Samar Mubarakmand (N.I, H.I, S.I), a distinguished nuclear scientist and GCU alumnus, mentioned that of the 140 individuals involved in the nuclear tests, 90 were technicians and engineers, and 45 to 50 were scientists. Notably, around 40 of the 45 leading scientists were alumni of Government College (University) Lahore, and all of them were honored with the highest civil awards.
Dr. Samar Mubarakmand recalled his 1961 visit to Delhi as a student with the Jones Physics Society, where an Indian student tried to make fun of Pakistan as outdated and primitive in front of three students. This experience stayed with them and motivated their pursuit of scientific research. "One of these three became the Chairman of SUPARCO, another led KRL, which enriched uranium for Pakistan's nuclear program, and the third, who is before you, became Chairman of NESCOM and contributed to Pakistan's missile program," Dr. Mubarakmand said.
Dr. Mubarakmand emphasized that Pakistan possesses advanced technical weapons with precise targeting capabilities. "Our defense is impregnable. Today, the enemy tries to weaken Pakistan from within, creating extreme polarization. We need peace in the country," he said. "Our scientists turned down lucrative offers to serve their country. I never went abroad to make money; I stayed to serve my homeland," he said, urging others to prioritize national service over personal gain.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Shazia Bashir said Dr. Mubarakmand is our national hero. She emphasized that GCU's alumni network aims to bring together outstanding Ravians to inspire current students. "Our students have not only made the university proud but have also brought honor to Pakistan," she noted.
The Vice Chancellor emphasized that the Prime Minister, who took the courageous step of conducting nuclear tests despite international pressures, was a Ravian, and the scientists who made this monumental achievement possible were also Ravians. She encouraged the new generation of Ravians to seek their place in science and technology while maintaining awareness and respect for their traditions.
The seminar was attended by VC ITU Prof. Dr. Adnan Noor Mian, former VC GCU Prof. Dr. Ahmad Adnan, Chairman Department of Physics, COMSAT University Lahore Campus, distinguished old Ravians, and prominent faculty members including Prof. Dr. Khalid Mahmood Sanjrani, Dean Prof. Dr. Sultan Shah, and Additional Registrar Dr. Shaukat Ali, along with a large number of students and faculty.
