GCU Law School holds int’l conference on alternative dispute resolution

An international conference on Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) titled “Harmonizing Dispute Resolution: Exploring International Perspectives in ADR” was held at the GC University Lahore.
Organized by the University’s Dr. Iqbal Law School in collaboration with the Lahore Bar Association (LBA) and the Legal Aid and Justice Authority, Islamabad, the conference aimed to delve into various facets of ADR methods, including mediation, arbitration, negotiation, and collaborative law, and their global implications.
The inaugural session, chaired by GCU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Ahmad Adnan, also featured international speakers, including Prof. Dr. Herman Roborgh from England, who heads the School of Religion and Philosophy.
Himanshu Raj, former Advocate General of Haryana, India, addressed the conference virtually.
In his keynote address, Prof. Dr. Dil Muhammad Malik, Dean of the University of South Asia, underscored the historical inevitability of disputes within societies, tracing back to the earliest human civilizations. He highlighted the transformative power of ADR practices, emphasizing their capacity to enhance access to justice and foster amicable resolutions.
He stressed the importance of ADR in not only reducing the burden on traditional court systems but also in promoting social cohesion and harmony. Citing examples like ombudsman offices, he advocated for greater public awareness and adoption of ADR methods. Prof. Malik urged stakeholders to learn from successful models, emphasizing the need for standardized terminology and concerted efforts to streamline dispute resolution processes.
In his speech, Prof. Dr. Herman Roborgh emphasized the need for a fundamental shift in thinking and behavior towards Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). He stressed that while training is essential, the real change begins with individual introspection and daily practice. Dr. Roborgh highlighted that ADR is not just a set of techniques but a mindset—a way of thinking and behaving that prioritizes listening, understanding, and humility over arguing, dominating, and proving oneself right.
Addressing the conference through a video link from India, Himanshu Raj stressed that harmonizing ADR in an international context is crucial for promoting efficient and effective dispute resolution in today's interconnected world. He emphasized the importance of establishing commonality in principles, procedures, and standards to enhance the reliability, accessibility, and enforceability of ADR mechanisms, ultimately contributing to greater confidence and trust in the international business environment.
Earlier, in her inaugural speech, Dr. Abida Hassan, the Head of the Department at Dr. Iqbal Law School, emphasized the need to embrace diverse strategies that promote efficiency, fairness, and sustainability in dispute resolution. She stated that the conference would analyze the role of legislation, court rules, professional standards, and accreditation schemes in promoting the quality and accountability of ADR services through the latest research, case studies, and practical tools.
