GCU celebrates World Fisheries Day

An awareness walk and seminar were held at GC University Lahore under the auspices of its Department of Zoology, Zoological Society, and the Pakistan Fisheries Society to commemorate World Fisheries Day. Delegates from various institutions, such as the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore College Women University, Kinnaird University, and Government Gulberg Degree College, participated in the event, aimed at raising awareness about the vital role of fisheries and aquaculture in the ecosystem. The proceedings began with an awareness walk led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Ahmad Adnan, highlighting the importance of responsible fisheries management. Following the walk, the seminar featured distinguished experts, including Dr. Muhammad Ayub from the Pakistan Fisheries Society, Muhammad Umer Sindhu from Tawakkal Fish Hatchery Muzaffargarh, and Prof. Dr. Noor Khan from the Institute of Zoology, University of the Punjab Lahore.
Prof. Dr. Atif Yaqub, the chief organizer, provided the introductory note, and Prof. Dr. Hafiz Muhammad Tahir, Director of the Nazir Ahmad Institute of Biological Sciences, welcomed the attendees.
Dr. Muhammad Ayub, the President of the Pakistan Fisheries Society, shared insights into bridging the gap between academia and industry, emphasizing the urgent need for sustainable aquaculture management.
Prof. Dr. Noor Khan highlighted overlooked sectors in the Pakistani aquaculture industry and discussed emerging trends. Mr. Muhammad Umer detailed successful pangasius fish farming at Tawakkal Hatcheries Muzaffargarh.
Prof. Dr. Anwar Malik, a veteran Professor of Zoology, shared his research journey in aquaculture, emphasizing the dedication required for a lasting impact. Prof. Dr. Sultan Shah, Dean of the Faculty of Islamic Learning and Oriental Languages, expressed appreciation for the organizers and distributed commemorative shields on behalf of the Vice Chancellor.
Prof. Dr. Ahmad Adnan, the Vice Chancellor, also commended the organizers, expressing hope that such events would benefit students pursuing degrees in Zoology and Fisheries. He acknowledged the efforts of the organizing committee, including Prof. Dr. Atif Yaqub, Dr. Shaukat Ali, Dr. Kifayat Ullah Khan, Dr. Shahid Sherzada, Mr. Saeed Akram Khan, and Ms. Samia Azad, for making the event a successful educational venture.
