The Department of Library and Information Science (LIS) at Government College University (GCU) Lahore offers a professionally oriented undergraduate degree, BS Library and Information Science, designed to prepare information professionals for careers in libraries, archives, digital repositories, records centers, and knowledge organizations. The program responds to the growing national and global demand for skilled professionals who can manage, organize, retrieve, and disseminate information across traditional and digital platforms. The curriculum aligns with the Higher Education Commission (HEC) Undergraduate Education Policy 2025 and draws on the university’s longstanding tradition of library education and professional practice.

History of the Department

The Department of Library and Information Science is a newly established academic unit at GCU Lahore, building on a history of teaching library subjects at intermediate and interdisciplinary levels. Over several years, qualified library professionals provided instruction across multiple course sections, laying a strong foundation in information science. With the vision of the University’s leadership, the full fledged BS LIS program was launched to enhance academic offerings in information management, strengthen research capacity, and meet the professional needs of the knowledge society.
