Islamic Studies

Introduction

The Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies is one of the oldest departments of GCU. Dr. G.W. Leitner, an Orientalist, Professor of Arabic and the first Principal of Government College, Lahore founded the department in 1864. In 2005, a 4- Years Degree Programme was introduced as a Major Subject. The Department acquired the Postgraduate status after launching MPhil in Islamic Studies in 2010. Ph.D Programme in Islamic Studies was started in 2013. A 2-Year M.A Programme in Islamic Studies was launched in 2015. A 4-Year degree Programme was launched as replica in 2019. The department also offers a Certificate Course in Arabic Language. Eminent Scholars like Prof. Noor Bakhsh, Dr. Pir Muhammad Hassan, Prof Sheikh Inayat Ullah, Prof. Abdul Qayyum, Dr. A.S. Agha, Dr. Zia-ul- Haq Sufi, Dr. S.M. Zaman, Dr. Baha-ul-Haq Rana, Prof. Rafi Ullah Shihab, Prof. Imtiaz Ahmad Saeed, Dr. Khurshid-ul-Hassan Rizvi and Prof. Khan Muhammad Chawala have given their best to the department.

The Department aims at realizing the long cherished dream of striking a balance between the pristine values of Islam as outlined in the Holy Qur'an and the Sunnah, and the practical challenges of modern times. We try to cultivate a spirit of dispassionate research bringing about chisled minds firm in belief but endowed with tolerance without, of course, being apologetic. The highly qualified academicians have been engaged to focus on achieving excellence in education and research and contributing to the intellectual, cultural and social development of the institution.
