Contemporary media is a ubiquitous force, which shape our understanding of current events, entertainment and societal values. In this environment, discerning journalism transcends mere practicality; it becomes a moral imperative. By equipping individuals with critical thinking skills, journalism education empowers responsible and informed engagement with information.
Recognizing the burgeoning influence of mass media, the department of media studies embarked on a noteworthy journey in 1987 when journalism was introduced as an elective subject for political science students at the undergraduate level. This initial step laid the groundwork for a dedicated focus on communication, which later culminated in the establishment of the Department of Mass Communication in 2007. It offered minor courses which were taught to the students in combination of other major degrees at the Government College university, Lahore.
With the time, the department demonstrably adapted to the dynamic media landscape. In 2021, it transitioned from offering a minor in mass communication to a comprehensive degree program in Media and Communication Studies. This shift reflected the department's unwavering commitment to providing students with a holistic understanding of media, encompassing both traditional and contemporary approaches. In 2022, the department strategically adopted the title Department of Media Studies, solidifying its focus on the multifaceted nature of media theory, media production, and public relation and advertisement.
The department of media studies stands as a beacon for the vital role of imparting education within the domain of media studies by offering flexibility within its undergraduate level of academic program with the option of multiple specializations that cover the multifaceted approaches of contemporary media studies. Through its unwavering commitment to academic excellence and practical experience, the department aim to prepare future generations to focus on responsible media consumption and production in the contemporary landscape.
Our vision and mission
The department's core mission is to cultivate a supportive and intellectually stimulating environment for its students. By fostering critical and creative thinking skills, we empower students to become active and discerning participants within the media ecosystem. Recognizing the importance of practical experience, the department established the Young Journalists' Society (YJS). This initiative provides a valuable platform for students to hone their journalistic skills and gain invaluable real-world experience.
