Seminar, walk at GCU mark World Alzheimer’s Day

A seminar on Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia was held here at Government College University Lahore on Monday on the occasion of World Alzheimer’s Day.

 

Punjab Health Minister Dr. Yasmin Rashid chaired the seminar and also led an on-campus awareness walk along with Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Asghar Zaidi, Alzheimer’s Pakistan President Mr. Zia Haider Rizvi and eminent doctors to raise awareness about memory-loss related diseases and their risk factors.

 

Addressing the seminar, Dr. Yasmin Rashid laid stress on raising awareness about healthy lifestyle and early detection of dementia related diseases. She said Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease and worsens over time; in its early stages, memory loss is mild, but with late-stage Alzheimer’s, individuals lose the ability to respond to their environment.

 

The Health Minister said awareness about Alzheimer is still very low in Pakistan, a couple of decades ago much people in Pakistan were not even aware of its name. She asked students and teachers to act as volunteers in their families and communities to raise awareness about different diseases.

 

Dr. Yasmin Rahsid appreciated the work done by Alzheimer’s Pakistan towards the welfare of people with dementia and their caregivers.

 

Alzheimer’s Pakistan Secretary, Dr. Hussain Jafri provided details of services offered to persons with dementia their caregivers.

 

Vice Chancellor Prof. Zaidi said that Pakistan has close to 14 Million older persons and by the time it would get to 2050, we will have 44 million older persons in our society. “We need to start preparing for the challenge we are going to face in the next three decades,” he added.

 

He also shared the key findings of his research on “Understanding, Beliefs and Experiences of Dementia in Pakistan” conducted in collaboration with Age International and University of Oxford. He also compared the speed and scale of population ageing in different countries of South Asian, to highlight that dementia is fast becoming a global public health priority.

 

Eminent neurologist Prof. Dr. Muhammad Athar Javed briefed the symptoms and risks factors of Alzheimer. He said all memory loses were not dementia anyone experiencing dementia-like symptoms should see a doctor as soon as possible.

 

He said as Alzheimer’s advances through the brain it leads to increasingly severe problems, including disorientation, deepening confusion about events, time and place; suspicions about family, friends and professional caregivers and more serious difficulty in speaking, swallowing and walking.

 

Dr. Ali Hashmi, a Professor of Psychiatry at King Edward Medical University Lahore, said Alzheimer could not be fully cured but quality of life of patients could be improved. He advised the caregivers to regularly consult doctors and physiatrists, keep environment comfortable and calm for patients, maintain their regular daily activities and structure and assess sleep and eating patterns. He also stressed upon provide counseling/education/psychotherapy to caregivers as well.

 

Alzheimer’s Pakistan President Mr. Zia Haider Rizvi and GCU Psychology Department Chairperson Prof. Dr. Syeda Salma Hasan also addressed the seminar. Both emphasized the importance of awareness of dementia in Pakistani Society.
