INTRODUCTION

The Department of Geography can be traced back to 1931-32, when Geography was introduced as a subject. The department was formally established in 1936. A number of eminent scholars and professors contributed to the growth of the department. Professor of stature associated with the department over the years have been Prof. Muhammad Nazir, Prof. A.N. Kapur, Prof. Aziz Ahmad Sheikh, Prof. Mian Muhammad Aslam, Prof. Aziz-Ur-Rehman, Prof. Muhammad Nawaz Prof. Syed Khalid Shah, Prof. Dr. M.H. Bokhari, Prof Muhammad Ahmad, Prof. Khadim Ali Khan and currently Pro. Dr. Ali Iqtadar Mirza.

The faculty at the department is cognizant of the concerns and challenges of the globalized world. The department has recently redesigned and updated its BSc (Hons) courses to meet the market demand and to equip the young minds for advanced professional careers. BSc (Hons) programme covers Geography, Spatial/Urban Planning, Landuse Planning and Management, Water Resource Management and Disaster Management etc.

The department of geography has signed MoUs with the national and international universities and departments like, PennState University, USA Department of Earth Sciences, university of Wuhan, China, also with national universities and department like, City and Regional Planning, UET, Lahore, PHATA, Urban Unit, Punjab, Pakistan Meteorology Department and Flood Forecasting Division, Punjab, SUPARCO, Pakistan, UVAS, Lahore, NIDM, PDMA and Pakistan Red Crescent Society, Punjab. The department of geography has also updated the courses of its BS (HONS) and MS programs in order to equip the students with the skill required in an integrated environment. Therefore, two new combinations of geography are introduced at BS(HONS) with Mathematics and Physics, with Statistics and Environmental Sciences.

MISSION STATEMENT

To enhance appreciation and understanding of the subject and integrated studies the department of geography has a mission of working with an interdisciplinary approach and intersectoral coloration in academic domain and research fields by training the young, ambitious generation in recent technologies to enhance them to cope with future challenges and to promote research culture.

Programme Aim

Teaching goals

 Department of geography is focused on the student centered approach using the techniques of blended learning technology, making the learning more interactive and interesting for the students. Teaching goals are further subdivided into two domains: knowledge based goals and skill based goals.

Knowledge based goals

      Knowledge goals aim to enrich the students with Geo-literacy, students will learn to use the geographic thinking, skills and perception to solve the geographic problems.

 Objectives
  • To demonstrate Physical Geography by studying the interaction between four Geo-spheres:  Lithosphere, Biosphere, Hydrosphere and Atmosphere.
  • To interpret Human Geography by studying human world and its interaction with the Environment, including Culture, Demography, Spatial Planning, Community Development, Resource Management and Regional Studies.
  •  To conduct seminars, workshops, conferences and study tours to strengthen the existing Knowledge.

 Skill goals focus on the market oriented approach to equip the students with both knowledge and technical skills to meet the growing demand for professionals, who can combine the geographic education with strong Geomatics skills.    

Objectives
  1. To generate written reports and verbal presentations about a geographical problem using documents, primary or archival data in a professional way.
  2. To enhance the manual mapping, map reading and map interpretation skills.
  3. To create maps using advanced digital cartography techniques.
  4. To solve the Geographical issues using the latest techniques of Geomatics: GIS(Arc GIS 10.2.2) and Remote Sensing (Erdas imagine).
  5.  To enrich the students’ knowledge with the techniques of Digital Image processing and interpretation of Arial Photographs.
  6. To  analyze and solves the geographic problem with the help of spatial modeling like Arc Hydro in case of water management and climate models to study the climate change.
  7. To analyze and organize meteorological data using database management systems.
  8. To take appropriate measures using disaster management skill during critical times by training and workshops.

 Research goals

 To emphasize on the targeted strategic research clusters using interdisciplinary initiatives that can help to foster research partnership and promote collaboration with public and private sectors.

  1. To promote the advance research in the field of physical geography at undergraduate and graduate level.
  2. To nurture the research with the advance geospatial techniques.
  3. To boost the creative writing skills that can vigorously increase the productivity to publish books and articles in the relevant fields.
  4. To encourage the alignment and optimization of the undergraduate and graduate programs with respect to research clusters, to expand the research opportunities and resources that can attract and expand the robust number of PhD scholars.
  5. To participate in the national and international research projects in promoting research culture of the university.
  6. To promote the faculty research projects that can helpful for the public and private sectors.

 Professional goals

 The Department of Geography GC University, Lahore always tries it best to deliver the real-world services to the university, the community, the country, and to the discipline. Our qualified faculty and students are encouraged to lend their expertise to appropriate stakeholders.

  Objectives

  1. To enhance the collaboration with the public and private sector, e.g. The Urban Unit, Punjab (Urban Sector Planning & Management Services Unit (Pvt.) Ltd.), Punjab Meteorological Department (PMD), Flood Forecasting Division, Punjab, University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore (UET),  SUPARCO, Pakistan, Punjab Housing and Town Planning Agency, NIDM, PDMA, UVAS, and Pakistan Red Crescent Society, Punjab.
  2. To develop the international collaboration with universities, e.g. Pennsylvania State University, USA and University of Geosciences, Wuhan, China.
  3. To serve the community with urban planning and disaster management skills.
  4. To create paid and unpaid internship opportunities for the students in both public and private sectors.
  5. To encourage the students to participate in the co-curricular activities and departmental societies that will help them to learn the spirit of team work.

Academic Links

  • Academic collaboration with City and Regional Planning (CRP), University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore. MoU has been signed between the two universities on 4th September, 2009.
  • MoU has been signed between the Department of Geography GC University, Lahore and Punjab Housing and Town Planning Agency, (PHATA), Lahore on 28th June, 2010 for internship, research, data sharing etc.
  • MoU has been signed between the department of Geography GC University Lahore and Punjab Metreology Department Lahore for internship, data sharing etc in 2011.

Future Prospects

The graduates can apply for MSc in Community Development and Environmental Planning at City and Regional Planning, UET, Lahore. MS in GIS and Remote Sensing NUST, Islamabad. MSc in GIS at PUCIT, Lahore. Graduates have a number of career openings in both the private and public sectors. The graduates can become experts in Physical and Human Geography, Spatial/Urban Planners, Land use surveyors using advanced technology (GPS, Total Station, and Autolevelling etc) and GIS experts in the relevant fields.

MS GEOGRAPHY PROGRAME

 The MS program in Geography covers applied areas in the subject of Geography. The courses include Applied Physical Geography, Applied Human Geography, recent fields like Geography of Transportation, fluvial morphology, Disaster Risk Management, Regional planning, etc. as well as techniques like Remote Sensing, GIS, and others in the subject with their application in different fields.

 Objectives of MS Programme

  • To provide quality education in academics and research.
  • To educate advanced Physical Geography concepts in areas of climate studies, fluvial morphology, etc.
  • To impart applied Human Geography concepts in areas of demography, transportation, urban and regional planning, etc.
  • To introduce recent techniques of Remote Sensing and GIS with their applications.
  • To provide candidates the opportunity of post-graduating in Geography to broaden their education as well as research. The programme covers applied areas which fulfill the need of market and let the learner to understand and control environment and its related problems and issues.

Keeping in view of the academic and research development, the collaborations between Department of Geography and other departments and universities were established to promote practical academic activities, data sharing, holding of workshops and seminars. The following links/ MOU are actively working with the Department of Geography.

The applicant must meet the following general requirements to be eligible for admission :

  • Minimum 16 Years education will be required with atleast 2.50 CGPA or 60% marks in relevant subject.
  • Candidates must have passed GAT (General) Test at the time of admission with atleast 50% valid score.
