GCU holds international webinar on “Disaster Risk Reduction”

The Government College University Lahore Disaster Risk Management Society (GCU-DRMS) has
organized a one-day international webinar on “Disaster Risk Reduction” in collaboration with the
University of Peshawar and Jacksonville State University, USA. The webinar, chaired by Vice-Chancellor
Prof. Dr Asghar Zaidi, focused on strategies for disaster risk reduction including policies framework and
mitigation.
Dr. Alessandra Jerolleman from the Jacksonville State University and Dr Atta-ur-Rahman from the
University of Peshawar addressed the webinar and talked about the working of the SENDAI framework
that focuses on disaster risk reduction. This framework follows four major steps i.e., understanding
disaster, strengthening the governance, investing in resilience strategies and enhancement of disaster
preparedness
Dr Atta-ur-Rehman shed light on flood disasters and mitigation strategies with special reference to the
North-Western Region of Pakistan. He elaborated on the flood disasters situation in the Kabul River and
also discussed the case study of Nowshera. He suggested structural and non-structural mitigation
strategies such as investment and guided hit spurs respectively.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr Asghar Zaidi congratulated the GCU-DRMS and collaborating universities for
the successful proceedings of the event. He also discussed old-age vulnerabilities. The participating
departments from GC University included Geography, English Literature, Political Science, Economics,
Zoology, History, Urdu, Chemistry, Physical Education, MBBS, BAF, CDPM Disaster Management,
Mathematics, Physics, and IT. The International Audience in the webinar was from China, Malaysia,
Turkey, the USA, and India.
Mr. Sahibzad Khan, the Chief Meteorologist of the Pakistan Meteorological Department, also attended
the webinar. The closing remarks were given by Dr. Shakeel Mahmood, the Chairperson of the
Department of Geography.
