INTRODUCTION

The Department of English Language and Literature enjoys the distinction of being the oldest Postgraduate Department of English in the country. It was established in 1873. It was at first affiliated with Calcutta University and later with the University of the Punjab.

English is acknowledged worldwide as the sole medium of international communication and information. The various programs offered by the Department aim to produce empowered learners with strong oral and written skills which will help them fulfill there economic and socio-cultural needs and also inculcate a creative, analytical and reflective bend of mind which enables them to think independently and critically.

Some of the great names in the country have been associated with the department as students and teachers. Among them is the legendary Prof Ahmad Shah (Patras) Bokhari, student, teacher and later Principal of the College. Prof Bokhari wrote authoritatively on such diverse topics as Indian music and dancing, books and culture. His collection of humorous essays in Urdu is a classic of its kind. Prof Siraj-ud-Din, who headed the department for many years, also enjoys a legendary status. An inspiring teacher of English, he influenced many generations of students who still cherish his fond memory. Other eminent teachers, scholars and writers who have been associated with the Department are Dr. Imdad Hussain, Dr. A. H. Khayal and Prof. Jilani Kamran.

FACILITIES

A seminar room for postgraduate students, equipped with the latest computers, provides easy access to the Internet and HEC on line journals and E-books.

Research

The Department of English Language and Literature has been publishing a literary and research journal entitled Explorations since 1969. Its contributors include prominent teachers and research scholars. The faculty’s area of interest and expertise include literary theory, modern novel and drama, post colonial literature and literature of war and conflict. There are research groups within the Department which focus on English Language Teaching and Literature of the Subcontinent.

English Literary Circle (ELC)

The English Literary Circle, renamed as the Safdar Mir English Literary Circle in honor of the writer and critic Safdar Mir, is a student body which organizes seminars, lectures and workshops on diverse social, cultural, literary and political topics. The ELC also organizes annual festivities and educational trips.

The Department also caters to the needs of language proficiency and has introduced an English Communication Skills programme for all levels of students, teaching faculty as well as professionals.

The candidates for admission to MPhil English Literature who have less than 50% marks in MA English Literature and they have an additional MA Degree in ELT/ Linguistic are also eligible to apply.

Students on completing the BA (Hons) easily find jobs in the education sector and also in the fields of journalism and mass media. A large number of students find jobs as teachers in schools in the private sector. Those with a higher degree, such as MPhil, find placements in universities. A degree in English also proves useful to students desirous of joining the federal and provincial civil services.
