Disaster Risk Management Society


“Disaster Risk Management Society” is established in GC University, Lahore under the supervision of Department of Geography.


  1. Institutional arrangement (Layout Plan)
  2. Training for Pre-Disaster preparedness, During Disaster response and Post- Disaster action.
  3. Education at Under Graduate and Graduate levels.
  4. Awareness through lectures, seminars, conferences with print as well as electronic Media’s involvement.
  5. Capacity Development Programs (Workshops or TOT programs).
  6. Emergency Response System.
  7. Establishment of early warning system.
  8. Disaster risk management planning, mainstreaming disaster risk reduction into development and coordination with NDMA, NIDM, PDMA and UNDP.
  9. Community and local level programming.



The students of GC University Lahore were imparted a special training to cope with emergencies in the situations of terrorist attack, natural calamity and fire accidents. The two-day training included detailed lessons, demonstrations and rescue drills on emergency evacuation plan, fire safety, bleeding control, fracture management, heat stroke, cardio pulmonary resuscitation, foreign body airway obstruction and spinal injury shifting management.

Addressing the closing ceremony at the university’s Oval Ground, Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Hassan Amir Shah lauded the enthusiastic participation of students especially females in the this advance emergency planning and life support training which was organised by the university’s Disaster Risk Management Society in collaboration with the Punjab Emergency Service. He said precious lives could be saved in the emergency situations by just good management which comes from effective training. In reply to a question by media, Prof Shah said they were not scared rather terrorists were afraid of them. He pledged that academia would continue their mission of progress, prosperity and enlightenment. He expressed gratitude to the Rescue 1122 officials for providing emergency training to his students, “saying that in many cases fire extinguishers were installed in the buildings but usually people around them knows nothing about their usage.”

Rescue 1122 Community Services Wing Director Ms Ruqia Bano Javed said there must be at least one person in every house which had adequate training and knowledge about emergency and rescue management. She said they had also trained students to provide basic life support to infants in the situation of emergencies especially natural calamities. She said that training Ravians was an amazing experience for her. However, she said females had comparatively showed more interest in the training and showed great compassion and enthusiasm for helping others.

Dr Ali Iqtiadar Mirza Advisor of the Society said that such trainings should be compulsory for every student because they also promote humanity in the society. “It’s our religious obligation to help others,’’ he added. He also said that the participants should cascade the rescue and life support training to their fellow students and family members.



Disaster Risk Management Society organized its orientation where the advisor DRMS, has delivered a comprehensive lecture on Disaster Management strategies in Pakistan and encouraged the newly selected cabinet as well as the members of DRMS to participate in volunteer work for the noble cause of humanity. President DRMS also had a brief talk with his cabinet.


Our two active members of the society Hafiz Ali Haider and RaoZaka Ur Rehman, president DRMS participated in International Volunteer Day organized by Pakistan Red Crescent Society with collaboration of United Nation Development Program. DRMS has fully honored the M.O.U signed with Red Crescent by managing the whole event under the guidance of Dr. Ali IqtdarMirza, Advisor DRMS and Mehboob Qadir Shah, Secretary Pakistan Red Crescent Punjab Branch.


In connection with first anniversary of Army Public School martyrs Disaster Risk Management Society organized a signature campaignon 15-12-15 in GC University Lahore for ending extremism. The campaign commenced at 9:00am in the morning and lasted till 5 o’clock in the evening.

Prof. Dr. Hassan Amir Shah Vice Chancellor GCU, Lahore, Dr. Ali Iqtadar Mirza, Advisor Disaster Risk Management Society, faculty and Students enthusiastically took part in this campaign which asked them to sign the following resolution “We solemnly vow to stand up against violent extremism in Pakistan. We vow to never let 16th December, 2014 be repeated. We condemn this heinous tragedy and extend our full support to government efforts being made under the National Action Plan to avoid such atrocities in the future.”
