INTRODUCTION

The Department of Chemistry is one of the oldest Departments of the GC University. It is housed in two Blocks, the Old Block was erected in 1896 and the New Postgraduate Chemistry Block was built in 1997. The Department has well-equipped laboratories with state-of-the-art research facilities. A galaxy of distinguished scientists has walked through the corridors of the Department of Chemistry. Among these, Prof. H.B. Dunnicliff and Prof. H.G. Khorana (Nobel Laureate) are prominent. The department has been a hub of research activities since its inception in 1896. A large number of alumni are serving at prestigious institutions across the world including academia, research and private sector organizations. The graduates of this Department are well respected and much sought after in job markets.

The library at the Department of Chemistry was established in the last decade of the 19th century. It is well-stocked with latest books, journals and professional periodicals, and has access to HEC e-library. Books pertaining to all the various disciplines of chemistry are readily available for students, teachers and research scholars. The library is electronically linked with the University’s central library through LIMS system. It facilitates the users to promptly locate their required material placed anywhere in GCU premises.

Certificate & Diploma in Forensic Sciences

GC University is running two separate programs i.e. six month Certificate in Forensic Sciences and One year Diploma in Forensic Sciences for Policeman and officials of other law enforcement agencies in collaboration with Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA). Forensic Science offers latest techniques and technology for investigation in determining the nature of the crime in Pakistan. Police forces are regularly involved in forensic investigations. The Certificate in Forensic Science is designed to give candidates a strong grounding in the different science disciplines that forms the basis of techniques used in Forensic investigations.

Eligibility Criteria:

Students who have obtained at least twelve years education (FA / FSc or equivalent) preferably employed in Law enforcement agencies, like Police Department etc.

BSc (Hons.)

The Department of Chemistry of GCU is the premier institution in the country where the B.Sc. 4-Year (Hons.) in Chemistry was introduced in 2006. It is a highly competitive programme of higher education with a carefully planned curriculum, based on the latest concepts of higher learning and research in accordance with the guidelines provided by the Higher Education Commission. A number of our graduates have managed to publish quality research papers in ISI journals with impact factor and were offered fellowships by renowned universities abroad for further studies.

M.Sc. Chemistry

Till 2008 the Department of Chemistry at GCU running M.Sc. 2-Year program which is reinstated in 2015 as evening program. The curriculum is planned to cater market needs and deliver better professionals in accordance with the guidelines provided by the Higher Education Commission. Our graduates will genuinely bridge University-Industry partnership.

MS Forensic Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry has taken a lead by introducing a new and highly demand-driven post-graduate program; namely, MS Forensic Chemistry. Forensic Science offers latest insights into techniques and technology for crime scene investigation. The Program is designed to benefit in-service professionals and freshmen who are interested to pursue their career as forensic analysts/experts. It is also useful for those who are associated with the professions of law, police, intelligence agencies, print and electronic media.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Students who have passed BSc (Hons)/MSc (Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Botany, Chemistry, Forensic Sciences, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Pharmacy, Zoology) or equivalent degree from HEC recognized University/institution with minimum of 2.50/4.00 CGPA or 60% marks (annual system) are eligible to apply.

MPhil Degree Program

Phil. in Chemistry was launched in the year 2002 when Government College Lahore was upgraded to the status of University. This program was structured to cope with the growing needs of higher education in the country. It offers advanced level courses of Physical, Organic, Inorganic/Analytical, Environmental and Materials Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biotechnology. This program trains students for advanced research and enhances the students’ capabilities to pursue a PhD within the country or abroad. It also hones their teaching skills and accelerates personal potential for industrial applications. The program duration is 2 years (4 semesters).

More than 50 Ph.D. students, including HEC awardees, are currently enrolled in the Department of Chemistry. They are working on various topics pertaining to all the research areas mentioned earlier.

Special Features

The Department of Chemistry is currently operating a prestigious society namely “Dunnicliff Chemical Society (DCS)”. DCS is a forum for learning and skill development of students in the Department. It encourages co-curricular activities and organizes study tours, seminars and technical workshops. In last year the society organized activities in collaboration with anti-narcotic force, Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) and other law enforcement agencies.
Department of Chemistry in January 2018 organized an International Conference for the promotion of University-Industry Linkage in collaboration with ORIC-GCU and Pakistan Institute of Chemists (PIC) where many national and international researchers participated along with a bunch of local industrialist. The department also encourages the research projects at the undergraduate and post graduate levels. Currently the Department is running many research projects in collaboration with industry and R&D organization.

Career Scope

Beyond BSc (Hons.), M.Sc. Chemistry and MPhil Chemistry programs, the Department of Chemistry is also offering specialized market oriented programs in Forensic Sciences. The Forensic graduates can join police force, hospitals, Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA), Law enforcement agencies, government laboratories, policy making/regulatory bodies and other such organizations, where collection, interpretation and presentation of scientific data is required. These graduates can also continue Ph.D. studies in basic disciplines of Chemistry, Pharmaceutical and Forensic sciences. Government College University Lahore has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) to launch new academic programmes in forensic science and will help in training of our graduates (Forensic Chemistry) in crime scene investigation, evidence preservation, crime mapping, fingerprints and DNA markers and technologies and analytical techniques. The PFSA also showed interest in providing internship and job placement to GCU students besides giving research projects to the University’s PhD students in the field of Forensic Science. The forensic agency would also facilitate GCU in upgrading and establishing Forensic Science laboratories.
