Punjabi Mushaira, Faiz Poetry Contest held at GCU


A Punjabi Mushaira and Faiz Ahmad Faiz Poetry Competition were held at the Government College University Lahore this week in connection with the World Poetry Day. Noted Punjabi poets from all over Pakistan presented their poetry at the Mushaira, while students from 22 universities participated in poetry competition.


The Punjabi Mushaira was inaugurated with the traditional lighting of the candle by Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Hassan Amir Shah. About 28 eminent Punjabi poets including Dr Sughra Sadaf, Younas Aqir, Murli Chohan, Asim Pehtayar and Habib Ullah presented the best of their poetry at the Mushaira held under the auspices of the University’s Punjabi Majlis. 



Speaking on the occasion, the Vice Chancellor revealed that GCU was going to establish the Punjabi Department very soon. He was very optimistic that the University would start admissions to the new BA (Hons) Punjabi this year. Prof Shah called upon the students to also study Punjabi literature for their spiritual elevation, saying that the world’s best mystic literature was available in Punjabi, and noted Punjabi classical poets could be juxtaposed with the best poets of the international languages. The Vice Chancellor believed that Punjabi must be taught to the children in schools.  


Later, a Bait Bazi, Ghazal and Nazam contests were the part of the 2nd Faiz Poetry Competition organized by the University’s Debating Society at Bukhari Auditorium. University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore secured the first position in Bait Bazi, while Punjab University (PU) and University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) stood second and third. The Nazam competition was won by the UAF, while the teams from Fatima Memorial Hospital and PU were declared second and third. The Ghazal Contest was won by the team UET Lahore, while King Edward Medical College (KEMU) and Punjab College Lahore stood second and third in this category. The overall team trophy was lifted by the Punjab University.






Students urged to study Punjabi literature for spiritual elevation


Prof Dr Hassan Amir Shah Vice Chancellor GC University Lahore called upon the students to study Punjabi literature for their spiritual elevation, saying that “you may learn English for earning a better livelihood, but you must also study Punjabi literature especially poetry for your spiritual elevation.”. Addressing the Punjabi Mushaira organized by the University’s Punjabi Majlis, the Vice Chancellor said that the world’s best mystic literature was available in Punjabi, and noted Punjabi classical poets could be juxtaposed with the best poets of the international languages. He also said that Punjabi poetry was also a true reflection of our folk wisdom. He told students Punjabi is an international language spoken in several countries and connects millions of people who understand and communicate with each other through it. He vowed that GCU would continue to work for the promotion of Punjabi language and literature.

As many as 30 prominent poets, including Rai Muhammad Nasir Khan, Younas Ahqar, Prof Saadat Saeed, Adal Minhas Lahori, Kalyan Singh Kalyan, Veer Sapahi, Afzal Sahir, Ramzan Shakir, Saima Almas and Saeed Ulfat presented their poetry Rai Muhammad Khan Nasir chaired the Punjabi Mushaira (poetry recitation).
